Still suprised at common misconseptions about medical marijuana

The Press of Atlantic City had an article Sunday wherein Robert Goldberg, director of medical oncology at Shore Memorial Hospital in Southern New Jersey is quoted as questioning if some of his patients who have a hard time inhaling now could use it. He has no clue one need not smoke cannabis to use cannabis.

This kills me. Cannabis does NOT need to be smoked and has a number of other ways it can be ingested as a medicine and still work. Both methods are proven safe to the users health. Vaporizers do exactly that, they turn the active ingredient in cannabis into a misty vapor that is actually soothing on the throat and lungs to inhale. You do not burn the plant material so there are no oils, tars or other carcinogens to inhale. It's probably THE safest delivery method for a medication you can get.

The other method is good old oral consumption. Many people ingest cannabis in tinctures and foods. You don't really get any effects from just eating buds the THC needs to be heated and dissolved into fat or alcohol and dosages can be controlled. If you're new to cooking with cannabis start slow as it can be much more effective when consumed this way and it generally takes a lot longer to feel the effects. Many users have done this and scared the crap out of themselves if they are fairly new to using cannabis. It might take 45 minutes to an hour to feel anything and when you do you might go right to STONED. Consuming marijuana also seems to last longer than smoking or vaporizing for many people so take that into consideration as well.

People who don't use cannabis think medical users use it to get stoned but that's not the case. Patients use small amounts as needed to ease their symptoms and are not looking to smoke bong hit after bong hit and get "wasted".

There are side effects to using cannabis for many people like becoming paranoid or short-term memory loss for instance but none of the side effects are nearly as bad as in prescription medications and not a single overdose in over 5,000 years of recorded use. Nobody has ever died directly from abusing cannabis, ever. Even if marijuana had as much potential for abuse as do alcohol and cigarettes it's nowhere near as harmful if used properly just like any other drug a doctor can prescribe.

About 20 million Americans per year admit to using marijuana in the federal health surveys. Many of those people have used cannabis on a daily basis for years on end with no problems. They function in society and unless they get busted for possession live what most people would consider good productive lives. It's the law that creates all the problems and hardships for society stemming from pot not the use of pot itself.
